Stuck in a reading slump? Try these tips

Reading slumps are a common and natural part of the reading process.

They happen to even the most avid readers, and it's important not to feel discouraged if you find yourself in a slump.

Rather than forcing yourself to read, take a break and come back to it when you feel ready.

Remember, reading should be enjoyable and not feel like a chore.

If you’re in one right now, try any of these five simple tips:

1. Read a new genre

If you normally read self-help/non-fiction, go grab a sci-fi thriller.

If you’re always reading philosophy, go read a personal finance book.

Mixing in a different genre is an easy way to make reading more interesting by adding novelty.

2. Mix up the medium

You can try out audiobooks, sign up for an online class on Udemy or Masterclass, or watch some YouTube videos.

Books aren’t the only way to acquire new information. Find out what works for you and do that more often.

3. Go on a book haul

“But wait…aren’t we supposed to read what we already have?!”

Maybe. But it doesn’t help if you’re not interested in any of them.

Sometimes, going on a book haul is all you need to spark interest.

4. Reread one of your favorite books

Rereading your favorite books is the easiest way to enjoy reading again.

There’s a reason why you enjoyed the book in the first place.

And sometimes, you glean a new perspective from it.

5. Don’t force it

If none of these work, then that’s ok too. It’s good to take a break if you’re just not feeling it.

And whenever you get that urge to get back into books, you’ll find a renewed curiosity and vigor for reading.
