Why is it such a struggle to choose a book to read after you finish one?

Hello, let’s catch up 👋

A few popular posts you might have missed this week:

You stare at your bookshelf, overwhelmed by the choices.

Why is it such a struggle to choose a book to read after you finish one?

Don’t worry.

Here’s a foolproof method to narrow down your choices and find the perfect book to read next:

Start by asking yourself: What am I in the mood for?

Adventure?
Romance?
Horror?
Mystery?
Non-fiction?

Follow your intuition, and don't let societal pressure dictate your choices.

And if you ONLY read nonfiction books, then ask yourself:

What do I want to learn more about?
What am I looking to currently improve about myself?

Answer those two, and your path to your next book become much more clear.

Next, consider the length of the book.

Do you want a quick read or a longer experience?
Are you up for a series, or just one book?

If you're unsure, start with a shorter or standalone book.

Look at the author.

Have you enjoyed their work before?

If so, try another one of their books.

If not, read reviews or ask friends (or me) for recommendations.

Consider the age range and target audience.

Is it meant for young adults?
Children?
Adults?

This can determine the themes and level of complexity.

Look for a book with a unique premise or perspective.

  • A different setting

  • A unique style

  • A cultural perspective

This can make the reading experience more enjoyable and informative.

Lastly, don't be afraid to branch out of your comfort zone.

  • Try a different genre

  • Read a classic

  • Explore a new author or culture

You might discover a new favorite book or author.

In summary, narrow your options by considering your mood, the book's length, the author, the target audience, and the premise or perspective. Don't be afraid to explore new genres and authors.

📖 Books to Check Out

The Art of Leading by Roy Dockery is a simple, easy-to-understand, and beginner’s friendly book that is a valuable resource for anyone looking for insight into how to be an effective leader who leads with empathy.

Much of what is taught in 'The Art of Leading' reminds me of Dale Carnegie's book, 'How to Win Friends and Influence People'. An all-time classic itself.

So if that’s a book that you enjoyed reading, then I am pretty sure you would enjoy this one.

The world is complex and interconnected, and we need to understand the big ideas from big disciplines to have a whole map of reality and make better decisions. Critical thinking has to be based on going from the fundamental ideas to the mental models. Mental models are the most important ideas of each science: philosophy, mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, chemistry, biology, psychology, economics, and history.

You need to know and connect them.
