How To Create the Perfect Reading Schedule in 2024

Hello, let’s catch up πŸ‘‹

A few popular posts you might have missed this week:

Yesterday, I had someone reach out in a DM on Instagram and ask me this:

How [do] you [have] so much time to read? [I’m] curious to know [if] you don’t have work, friends, [or a] family.

My answer was simple:

I have multiple jobs but I get to work from home with them.

I have friends, but don’t get to see them as often as I used to, being we all have our own lives we live.

And I’m married with my wife and I expecting our first child.

I have all that stuff.

You just gotta manage your time and prioritize what you want to prioritize.

BUT…

I want to elaborate more, with you, on how to have an effective reading schedule that will benefit you.

Reading is the key to knowledge, but are you maximizing your reading schedule?

Here's how to design an effective reading schedule that will change your life:

πŸ‘‰ Set a reading goal.

How many books do you want to read this year?

Make the goal specific and measurable.

Write it down and hold yourself accountable.

πŸ‘‰ Create a reading list.

Focus on books that:
↳ Align with your goals
↳ Will teach you a tangible skill
↳ Make you a better person

Don't waste time on fluff.

πŸ‘‰ Determine how much time you can dedicate to reading.

Start with 10-15 minutes a day and work your way up.

Don't try to read for hours at a time.

πŸ‘‰ Schedule your reading time.

Treat reading like any other appointment on your calendar.

Read at the same time each day.

πŸ‘‰ Create a conducive environment.

Find a quiet place where you can focus.

Remove distractions.

Use an e-reader or physical books, whichever works best for you. (I prefer physical books)

πŸ‘‰ Stay consistent.

Reading is a habit.

Missing one day can easily lead to missing more. It’s happened to me plenty of times. I’m not a perfect reader. No one is.

Do everything you can to stick to your schedule.

πŸ‘‰ Track and measure progress.

Use an app or journal to keep track of what you've read.

I personally like to use Notion to track mine. Goodreads is another great one also.

Celebrate milestones.

πŸ‘‰ Review and reflect.

After finishing a book, take time to reflect on what you learned.

Take actionable steps to apply what you've learned.

Reading is useless if you don't apply it.

πŸ‘‰ Design an effective reading schedule and you'll open yourself up to a world of knowledge.

Set a goal, create a list, schedule, environment, and stay consistent.

Track your progress, reflect, and apply.

Your reading schedule can change your life.

The world is complex and interconnected, and we need to understand the big ideas from big disciplines, to have a whole map of the reality to be able to make better decisions. Critical thinking has to be based on going from the fundamental ideas to the mental models.  Mental models are the most important ideas of each science: philosophy, mathematics, physics, statistics, engineering, chemistry, biology, psychology, economics, and history.

You need to know and connect them.
